Year 2

Learning challenge

Each term the children will be working towards achieving different learning challenges. Our first learning challenge is to identify how we can create a gallery of important people so that we can celebrate people’s achievements and how they made a difference. Our hook to this challenge will be our ‘Famous person’ dress up day on Friday 8th September and our visit to the Birmingham gallery on Tuesday 12th September.

Science

This half term the children will be exploring ‘Materials’. The children will be identifying different materials and exploring properties to describe these.

English

For the first part of the half- term in English we will be innovating stories with a journey with a focus on different word classes and using a variety of punctuation including inverted commas.

We will also be exploring different SPaG terms and working towards cursive handwriting.

Maths

This term in maths we are working with numbers to 100. We will be exploring place value through partitioning as well as recapping number facts to speed up mental calculations.

PE

Our PE this half term is gymnastics. Please ensure that your child brings their PE kit every Tuesday and Friday. Children are required to wear a red polo shirt, black shorts and black pumps.

Reading Diaries.

Your child is expected to read every night, with an adult. Their reading diary should be completed with the title of the book and page number, the date you read and a appropriate comment or signature. This will be checked daily by a teacher. Children will be kept in at break times to read if their reading diary is incomplete.

Children will receive a weekly guided reading book and should chose a

daily independent book.

Homework

Children are expected to learn their weekly

spellings. All spellings will be handed out at the beginning of the term and tested every Thursday. Your child has also brought home a homework book—please help them to complete tasks in this book and return to school by Wednesday of the following week. Thank you.
